There is temperature gradient in asphalt road surfaces. However, the present laboratory rut tests for single asphalt surface layer and asphalt surface course were carried out under uniform temperature condition. A control system was developed to generate temperature gradient in the rut sample, and a series of total-thickness laboratory rut tests was carried out using the temperature gradient control system.
