A new chelating reagent (2-mercapto-4-methyl-phenyl)-methanol was synthesized using p-methyl-benzenethiol and formaldehyde in sodium hydroxide solution and was characterized by FT-IR. The effects of tool ratio of p-methyl-benzenethiol to formaldehyde, dosage of NaOH, reaction temperature and time on the removal of nickel ions by the chelating reagent were investigated.
