Milled wood lignin was isolated from white powdery bamboo and characterized using alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation, elemental analysis, molecular weight analysis and UV, FTIR, H-1-NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the bamboo lignin was of the syringyl(S)-guaiacyl(G)-p-hydroxyphenyl(H) type. There were 0.36 condensed G units per C-9 unit in lignin. The proportion of three constitutive monomeric units of lignin (viz G(e):G(c):S:H) was 0.49:1.12:1:0.47. The C-9 formula for bamboo lignin was C9H9.80O3.44(OCH3)(1.33).
