Representative SEM images of CNF and NCNF at high and low magnifications are shown in Fig. 2. Clearly, all samples show relatively smooth nanofiber surface and homogeneous morphology with diameter of 100–200 nm. The nanofibers interweave with each other, forming the carbon-based network. There is no obvious difference on morphology between CNF and NCNF. And NCNF treated at different temperature exhibits similar morphology. Carbon nanofiber (CNF) was developed via electrospinning technique with polyacrylonitrile as precursor. Nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber (NCNF), synthesized by liquid phase dispersion and carbonization processes with urea at 800–1000 °C, were investigated as negative electrode for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB).
