Fig. 1(a, b) showed the polarizing microscopy images of IP and MP. The optically isotropic area in IP (Fig. 1(a)) and the wide streamlining area with the obvious optically anisotropic feature in MP (Fig. 1(b)) were observed, demonstrating their distinct differences in molecular structure and optical texture. The rheological curves of IP and MP as shown in Fig. 1(c) confirmed that MP had higher SP of 270 °C than IP with 206 °C (Table 1). Moreover, TOF-MS spectra of IP and MP was depicted in Fig.

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with high specific surface area and flexible lap structure are highly desirable for numerous applications such as adsorption films, supercapacitors, heat dissipation elements, and composites. In this work, CNFs were prepared using two major categories of pitches, isotropic pitch (IP) and mesophase pitch (MP), as raw materials to compare their molecular structure effects on the morphology and properties of CNFs.
