少数民族传统民居是活态的文化遗产，当今对其进行保护与转化需要从时间与空间两个维度展开。以湘西苗族传统民居为例，可以运用符号学理论从语汇、语法、语境三个层面构建湘西苗族传统民居的符号识别体系，并结合时间与空间维度组成的文化坐标视角，遵循少数民族传统民居符号真实性、可识别性、居民认同的保护原则，采用同形异质、位置重构、以象达境的更新方法，以期为少数民族传统民居的可持续发展与民族文化的有效转化提供新思路。
