Cuprous sulfide (Cu2−xS) crystals in different stoichiometries were synthesized by hydro- and solvo-thermal methods at 125 °C using Na2S2O3 as sulfur source in pure water, mixed solvents of ethylenediamine (en) and water, and pure en, respectively. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersion spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and selected area electronic diffraction (SAED). Owing to different sulfur sources, crystal structures and morphologies of cuprous sulfides were different from those developed by some former researchers. Novel twelve-fold symmetrical Cu7S4 single crystals were synthesized at an en/water volume ratio of 3:1, and they were built up by two layers of about 80–100 nm in thickness. Moreover, the possible growth process had been discussed based on the analyses of detailed configuration of the products.

In(OH)3 and InOOH crystals were synthesized at different temperatures by diglycol-mediated solvothermal processes. Their phase structures, morphologies and growth mechanisms were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical analysis. A small quantity of ((H2O)3In)Cl3 was observed in In(OH)3 crystals, which resulted in formation of In(OH)3 crystals with complicated shapes and morphologies. In(OH)3 grew along [1 0 0] direction, while ((H2O)3In)Cl3 grew preferentially along several crystal directions. In-situ transformation from both In(OH)3 and ((H2O)3In)Cl3 to InOOH developed at temperature higher than 140 °C, consequently InOOH nanoparticles partly inherited the morphologies of In(OH)3 nanorods.

Every n x n generalized K-cent rosy m metric matrix A can be reduced into a 2 x 2 block diagonal matrix (see [Z. Liu, H. Can, H. Chen, A note on computing matrix-vector products with generalized centrosymmetric (centrohermitian) matrices, Appl. Math. Comput. 169 (2) (2005) 1332-1345]). This block diagonal matrix is called the reduced form of the matrix A. In this paper we further investigate some properties of the reduced form of these matrices and discuss the square roots of these matrices. Finally exploiting these properties, the development of structure-preserving algorithms for certain computations for generalized K-centrosymmetric H-matrices is discussed. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. An ultra-high strength aluminum alloy was produced by casting and then extruded to rods. The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy was investigated. After single ageing (120°C, 24 h), the tensile strength was 812.4 MPa and the elongation was 6.2%. After retrogression reaging (RRA), the tensile strength was 751.2 MPa and the elongation was 6.4%. The strengthening mechanism is considered as fine grain strengthening, substructure strengthening and dispersion strengthening by Al3(Sc, Zr).

The influences of B2O3/SiO2 ratio and different alkali earth metal oxides MO (M= Ba, Mg, Ca) on the crystallization behavior of B2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 (BAS) glass were investigated by means of DSC, XRD and SEM. With the reduction of B2O3/SiO2 ratio, the crystallization activation energy increases at first and then decreases, reaching the minimum value of 375.4 kJ·mol-1 when the B2O3/SiO2 ratio is 2.2. The crystalline indices (n) are all more than 4, which indicates that the glass is in bulk crystallization. When the glass was heated to 800°C, the primary precipitated crystalline phase was Al4B2O9. With the increase of temperature up to 1100°C, Al18B4O33 and Al5BO9 appeared and became the major crystalline phases in BAS glass-ceramics.

ZnO nanorods were prepared by a hydrothermal reaction in the presence or absence of PVP (polyvinyl pyrrolidone). The obtained products were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, UV-Vis absorption (UV) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results suggest that PVP plays an important role in the preparation of ZnO nanorods. The UV absorption spectrum showed PVP increases the UV-shielding ability but doesn't influence the transparency in the visible light region. A weak UV emission at 353 nm of PL spectra exhibit the surface of ZnO nanorods is passivated and oxygen-related defects is supplied by PVP.
